A cautionary tale

The following is a review I received back in 1998 about a fantasy novel I had submitted for publication. Needless to say, rightly or wrongly, I decided not to follow it up…I thought some of you might enjoy it nevertheless…

“… a finely judged fantasia which delineates with brio an oneiric landscape in which supernal virtue and infandous evil are held in terrible equipoise the naturalistic dialogue ensures that characterization never divagates into the Scyiia of allegory and the Charybdis of flat description the novel excels at setpiece and mythic coup de theatre I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending it for inclusion in the (name of publisher) lists.”

Any words you actually recognise there? Are you impressed? I wasn’t. I was even less impressed when they made a deferred offer of publication, inviting me to pay half the publishing costs now, if I wished it to be published sooner. We live and learn!
